Compost piles

I started composting more than a year ago, and my bin is not pretty, but it works, and I’ve kept pounds of organic material out of our overflowing landfils.

I have a grand plan for my bin, and hopefully someday soon, I’ll will finish it. Thankfully my bin is hidden at the bottom of our property and no one really noticed is, unless they are looking for it. It works, but isn’t the most beautiful thing you have ever seen.

However, My friend, Kym, made beautiful bins out of pallets, which is where I got my idea. You can check out what an expert free bin system could look like.

Tahoe: Day four, a bit of drama

We woke up to a beautiful day and planned on riding the bike and kids to town and go river rafting down the Truckee river. While Vido was getting the bikes ready, he had a sneezing attack which turned more serious. He had been having sinus issues and is scheduled to have surgery this month (july). With the smoke lingering in the air along with the pine pollen, and a slightly weaker body from the race the day before his lungs were compromised.

I ended up calling 911 and driving him to the fire station in Tahoe City. The paramedics took wonderful care of him, but still wanted him to go to the hospial in Truckee, 20 minutes away. After playing in the fire truck, the Kids and I followed in the car.

Vido was good as new in no time and we were river rafting that afternoon.

Tahoe: Day 3, race day

Vido and I headed out early for our race. We found parking right by the staging area and got ready. I was surprised that I wasn’t as nervous about the swim and was actually feeling confident. Something rather rare for me. I decided to wear my surf booties since we had a long walk out over rocks, it was a good move.

I started at the front with all the crazy fast people, not really a good place to be, and of course I panicked all the way to the first buoy. I couldn’t see anything expect bubbles all around me. The water was cold, around 55 degrees, and the hazy from the fires was still in the air.

I finally got a good rhythm by the second lap, but by that time I had lost so much ground, I was off the back but not last. I got out of the water quickly, thanks to my booties, and ran over to the transition and caught up with Vido.

Tahoe: Day two

We went out to breakfast at a fun cafe called Rosies, which the kids loved. Drove around the area and found where everything was.

I wanted to try out the wetsuit I borrowed before the race, so we headed down to the lake where we would swim the next day.

Two other girls were also doing a trial swim, so i swam along with them. the lake as incrediably clear and shallow, so that eased my open water swimming fears, slightly.

After breakfast, we ended up back at the house waiting for Grandma and Grandpa to arrive. The kids had much fun with their grandparents, and it truly was a treat for them.

First Day in Tahoe

Driving up the five we noticed the air quality wasn’t that great, but didn’t think too much of it. Once we hit the 80 to come to tahoe, we smelled smoke and remembered about the fires covering northern California. Thankfully they were not in Tahoe this year.

Tahoe was smokey and there was pollen everywhere, but still, very beautiful.

We stayed in a great house in Tahoe city, just about the town, which was two miles from the event we did. The kids had their own room, and were excited to put all their things away, and have a spaced bigger than their room at home. There was also a hot tub that we didn’t heat, but used as a mini swimming pool for the kids.

Tahoe: Day two

The second day of vacation we were in our new mountain house in Tahoe City. The kids were very excited about their room and the closet. They decided to hang up all their clothes. We also had a hot tub at this house but never needed to heat it. It was a mini pool for the kids.We looked around where the race was going to take place went to the store and just enjoyed our first day/evening in Tahoe.

Fires were burning all over northen cal, but they were not too bad where we were, but the pollen was blanketing everything outside in a fine yellow dust.
